Fastest sight reduction you've done
#1
Like everything in celnav sight reduction takes time.

What's the fastest Sun sight reduction you have carried out?

Just the time from when you store the sextant and sit down to begin the paper work.

For me, it was about 1 minute 30 seconds.  A lot of time is eaten up in turning pages.

Ed,

You're right- a lot of time in just moving paper.

My fastest was about 2 minutes.  I've since organized the pages I need most frequently into 3 different comb bound notebooks.

Book 1- has;

Sight reduction forms that are found on TheNauticalAlmanac.com and also the form I made for Moon and planet sights.

Book 2- has;
  • Altitude Corrections Table for Sun, Star & Planets
  • Altitude Correction Tables for the Moon
  • TABLE 6- Correction (Q) for Polaris
  • TABLE 4- Long Term GHA Aries
  • TABLE 4- GHA and Declination of the Sun for the Years 1981 to 2025 (Extended)
  • Increments and Corrections for the Sun on 2 pages
  • Increments & Corrections for Sun, Planets, Aries, Moon (the "yellow pages")
  • 2015 Navigational Stars SHA & Dec
  • TABLE 3- Conversion of Arc to Time
  • Navigational Star Chart from USNO

Book 3- has;
Latitudes I typical use from HO-249
TABLE 5- Correction to Tabulated Altitude for Minutes of Declination

It makes the entire process much quicker and more organized.
