Sight Calc App for Sight Reduction - PeterB - 03-18-2022 There is a free app available for smart phones called "Sight Calc" It is very straight forward and will provide you an azimuth, a true azimuth, and a calculated altitude for any input of Latitude, Longitude, LHA, and declination. It does not plot lines of position nor does it have any ephemeris data. Since it works for all latitudes and longitudes you can input either a DR location or an Assumed Position. Using it with an AP makes it an excellent way to check your work when you are learning to use traditional sight reduction tables such as H.O. 229 or H.O. 249. Its beauty is its simplicity -- and its price! PeterB RE: Sight Calc App for Sight Reduction - PeterB - 11-04-2024 Update as of November 2024 Sight Calc has a new interface which is supposed to be an improvement. It also now costs $1.99 at the Apple App store whereas before it was free. In addition it is approved for use with US Power Squadron courses. I did not upgrade mine as I have the free version and I am comfortable with the original interface. But if I did not I would not hesitate to pay $1.99 for this very useful app. As before there is no plotting and no ephermeris data, just straight forward sight reduction. It is very useful to use as a check as you are learning to use traditional tables, and to have for sight reduction in general. Peter B |
