I have a dilemma... two great looking sextants at good prices (about $250); I don't know which to choose.

The Freiberger Sextant has a lightweight aluminum alloy frame, a 4 x 40mm scope, a wooden storage case with instruction manual.  The horizon mirror is serviceable but needs replacing.

The Tamaya 833 has a 7x35 scope and is in good shape, no storage case.

They both appeal to me.

Which is the better sextant?

Joe,

Both are made by very good companies. Does the Freiberger has a wooden handle?

If they're both acceptable in terms of condition it's a tough choice. You'll get a good sextant either way. Make sure you can get a replacement horizon mirror before buying the Freiberger.

Good luck,

Clen

No, Clen, the Freiberger has a metal handle... what does that mean???

joe
Joe,

Most Freiberger's I've seen have a wooden handle mounted on the metal/aluminum frame. It's quite secure- just a nice touch of wood on a possibly cold handle when in the Arctic.

IC - I thought you might have some insight on different models or years of manufacture.  Well, Im still at the dreaming stage... its not likely that I can afford either.  Where I live 250 dollars is half a months pay.  We still have to eat and pay rent and utilities...  nevertheless I think Id almost give my right nut for a reasonable sextant...  LOL
